This study is based on the author's experience in project management, in the corporate businesses and in academic activities. After managing complex projects in Brazil and abroad, and having mentored the development of +200 project management post-graduation term papers, the author noticed that many of the deficiencies found in corporate project plans were also repeated in the student´s academic work. As business schools are the place where project managers seek improvement or even basic training to start their careers in this professional field, it seems that by knowing student´s project plans profile, we can also know the corporate project plans profile. This research aimed to identify the factors that affect managerial development and the independent study process for project management students, and to propose alternatives to enhance their professional and academic performance. During the study process an intense bibliographical / documentary research was carried out on 216 project plans (17,831 pages), term papers of 9 business and project management post graduate courses in one of the most important Brazilian business schools. Based on its outcomes, it was collected and analyzed a few students’ experience testimonies which supported a proposal of some innovations in the existing project management programs, through the adoption of the best teaching practices targeting business executives.
