Today, innovation becomes one of the most important aspects in a business environment. In a world in continuous transformation, innovation has become more than a question of establishing a competitive advantage, it has become a question of survival. This dissertation explores how innovation practices work in the “Front-End of Innovation” phase of startups, unicorns and large innovative companies. Based on a new conceptual framework, called Innovation Drivers, composed of four drivers: Insight Sources, Incentive Systems and Environments, Capacity and Knowledge and, Purpose, the author identifies similarities and differences in relation to the innovation processes adopted by nine organizations surveyed. Through the cases studied are also evaluated: the different innovation processes used for incremental, radical and disruptive innovations, and innovations in Products & Services, Processes and Business Models; instruments for reducing uncertainties and market validation; and innovation tools used. In this dissertation, the author presents five original contributions: (1) the conceptual framework of the four Innovation Drivers is validated as a useful framework for innovation management, (2) seven main models of management processes for the genesis of innovation in the Front-End of Innovation stage are suggested, (3) the innovation processes used in the Front-End of Innovation of Brazilian companies are more deeply understood, (4) fundamental differences of three categories of companies, Startups, Unicorns and Innovative large companies, are highlighted, and, (5), complementary criteria to the market value for the definition of unicorns is suggested. The study makes important contributions to academics and innovation managers, as well as pointing to some very promising paths for new research.
